My Son Locked Me in a Dog Cage—Then the Security Camera Spoke

“Then why were you trying to make her say she fell?”

He looked at the camera.

Then at me.

The question landed differently because there was no emotional speech hidden inside it.

It was only a fact.

He had told me to lie.

The camera had preserved it.

He could argue about my memory.

He could argue about my behavior.

He could argue about why he had moved into the house.

But he could not make that sentence disappear.

I watched him realize it.

He stepped away from the cage at last.

Not far.

Just enough to create space between us.

My daughter asked me whether I could stand.

I told her I didn’t know.

My legs had gone stiff from kneeling inside the drum, and my arms hurt enough that I didn’t want to put my full weight on them.

She told me not to force it.

My son muttered that she was encouraging me to exaggerate.

She ignored that too.

I looked down at my hands.

The dog food was beginning to dry around my fingers.

Earlier, the mess had been part of the humiliation.

Now I didn’t wipe it away.

I didn’t want anything altered before help arrived.

My son noticed.

“You can clean yourself up,” he said.

I shook my head.

His jaw tightened.

It was a tiny decision, but it belonged entirely to me.

The red camera light blinked again.

My daughter was still connected.

She asked him one final time why he had told her I attacked him.

He said nothing.

Then she asked why he had convinced her to bring a suitcase if his only concern was calming me down.

That was when his attention shifted completely away from the cage.

He looked toward the house.

For a second, I thought he might simply walk inside and refuse to answer.

Instead, he looked at me.

He was still holding the mallet.

He was still angry.

But now he was also cornered by his own timeline.

My daughter had been invited to the house before the worst of that afternoon happened.

The suitcase had been requested before she saw the cage.

His claim that everything had simply gotten out of hand didn’t explain why he had already been preparing her to remove me.

“Why?” my daughter asked again.

He looked at the camera, then at me, and answered before he could stop himself.

“Because she was supposed to sign the house over before you got here.”
