I tightened my grip on the phone.
“What happened?”
“There appears to have been a serious reaction to something they came into contact with. Both patients are being treated now.”
I did not ask why Caleb and Chloe had been together at nearly two in the morning. I already knew. Instead, I put on my coat, picked up my handbag, and drove toward the hospital.
By the time I reached Mercy General, I was no longer the wife hoping Caleb might explain everything away.
I was the woman who had finally collected enough pieces to understand that his affair was only the beginning.
Part 3: The Hospital Room Told Me Everything
I reached Mercy General shortly after two in the morning and followed the nurse toward the emergency wing. Before I even entered the treatment area, I could hear raised voices, hurried footsteps, and the kind of strained medical instructions that told me whatever had happened was serious.
Two security guards stood near the entrance to one of the treatment bays. When I stepped inside, I found Caleb on one gurney and Chloe on another, both being treated for a painful skin reaction that had left visible discoloration across parts of their bodies.
My mother-in-law, Evelyn, stood between them clutching her handbag against her chest. The moment she saw me, she rushed forward with panic written across her face.
“Nora! Thank God you’re here. Something happened to them. The doctors think they were exposed to some kind of chemical.”
I looked from Caleb to Chloe without answering immediately. Caleb would not meet my eyes, and Chloe was trying to pull a hospital sheet higher over herself.
There was only one question I cared about.
“What were the two of you doing together at the Grand Regent Hotel at one in the morning?”
The room went silent.
Evelyn blinked at me.
“What are you talking about? They were at a business meeting.”
“A business meeting in Room 412?”
Caleb finally looked at me, and the fear on his face told me I was no longer dealing with a man confident enough to lie casually. I took out my phone and played the recording I had already saved.
Chloe’s voice filled the room.
“I’m over a week late. You need to get rid of Nora. Let’s see who your mother chooses, the wife who can’t give her a grandson, or the woman carrying one.”
Evelyn slowly turned toward her daughter.
“Chloe… what is this?”
Nobody answered.
Then she looked at Caleb.
“Tell me she misunderstood.”
I stepped closer before he could invent another explanation.
“He never had the vasectomy he told me about.”
Evelyn stared at me.
“What?”
“For seven years, he let everyone believe he had sacrificed having more children for my health. He let you blame me for ending the family line while he kept his options open.”
Caleb closed his eyes.
“Nora, please…”
I kept going because for once I wanted the entire truth spoken where no one could quietly rewrite it later.
“And Chloe knew. She wasn’t just sleeping with my husband. She was talking about using a pregnancy to replace me in this family.”
Chloe started crying.
“I didn’t mean it like that.”
“You meant it exactly like that. I heard you.”
Evelyn looked physically stunned. For years, she had treated me as though I were the reason her son could never give her the biological grandson she wanted, and now she was realizing that the story she had defended had been built on a lie.
Caleb tried again.
“We can talk about this privately.”
“No. Privacy is what allowed this to continue.”
I told them I had already contacted an attorney and a forensic accountant. Whatever relationship Caleb and Chloe thought they were protecting had just become part of a much larger investigation into hotel charges, business expenses, and financial records that no longer looked innocent.
That frightened Caleb more than the confrontation itself.
“What did you send them?”
“Enough.”
By the time I left the treatment bay, Evelyn was demanding answers from both of them, Chloe was crying, and Caleb had finally stopped pretending this was something he could explain away.
The affair had destroyed my marriage.
But the money trail was about to destroy something much bigger.
